Revitalizing communities through arts and plastic.
Redemptive Plastics is a collaborative project co-founded and led by alt_ Chicago, an art-first, faith-based, community-driven nonprofit based on the west side that revitalizes neighborhoods utilizing the arts as a tool. Along with co-founders Happy Returns Studio, a Chicago studio working at the intersection of robotics, recycling and recreation, Redemptive Plastics has forged a new path where art, faith and community meet sustainability. Operating out of the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, this project partners and collaborates with individuals and organizations looking to redeem over discard, to close the loop and to create more sustainable practices revolving around plastic usage.
We collect and REDEEM discarded plastic in the community. We are artists, cohort members and volunteers working together to transform plastic into functional artwork.
Mission and Philosophy
Opportunities to dispose of trash in a sustainable manner are virtually non-existent. As we all know, waste that is not biodegradable fills oceans and landfills, contributing to the climate crisis and negatively impacting public health. A recent study found just 9% of plastic has been recycled, while methods for disposing of waste have become careless[OECD.org].
Redemptive Plastics examines these realities while providing a hope for the future. We believe that through care and collective action, we can redeem these objects by giving them a new life and creating a pathway for change.
Goal and Objective:
To create an open format system that impactfully reimagines plastics as a material for eco-friendly innovation while providing economic opportunities for the community to build their own future.
